Step on the Property Ladder

It’s like food for the soul standing up in front of a group of school pupils and hearing their ideas on money and house buying. Their perceptions are varied and often not far from the truth, but we know that getting into schools and sharing our knowledge is a venture worth taking to educate and engage young people in the aspirational world that is to ‘Step on the Property Ladder’. Collaborating with Kathryn Whittingham’s Money Smart to write and deliver a challenge experience for KS2, KS3, and KS5, puts us in safe hands. With a CeMap qualification, time in financial services and experience as a qualified teacher, Kathryn’s knowledge of both sectors works seamlessly with the wealth of mortgage and housing market experience at HomeLife - it’s an easy collaboration.

"I know how to be more money smart now – Kath made learning fun!"

Getting Involved

There’s been a great response to the event so far. Unsurprisingly, no one disagrees that teaching young people about buying, arguably, the greatest asset, is life knowledge worth sharing, so getting into more schools for the day to deliver the standalone event is the mission for this academic year. For the schools that welcomed us through their doors at the end of the last school year, the outcomes have been brilliant with pupil’s aspirations being ignited - "It’s made me want to be a mortgage broker, so I can help people get a home they actually want and can afford"; some had the surprising realisation that “"[they] always thought renting would be way cheaper...". Giving pupils a chance to play the role of a first time buyer, learn about the role of a mortgage broker and visit an estate agent links perfectly with the Gatsby Benchmarks for Careers provision, to Maths and Citizenship, providing meaningful engagement and exploration in life beyond the classroom. We’re excited about where this year will take us!
